Definitions related to backup

IT is full of acronyms, at DK Systems we try to educate our clients so they understand what we are talking about. Here are a few definitions:

NAS – Network Area Storage, often a piece of equipment with disks that you access through the network. It does not run an operating system like Windows, usually it has its own operating system.

SAN – Storage Area Network, used most often in bigger environments, the cost is often quite a bit more. It offers redundancy in the drives, meaning you can lose one or two and still be find.

The “Cloud” –  The cloud is just a term created to describe something found in the Internet. When we drew diagrams of two offices in the past, a picture of a cloud was used between the two locations. The packets just went somewhere and no one really knows how they get from point A to point B, it magically appears on the other side.

Cloud Backup

Over the years backup solutions have changed, many years ago tapes were the way to back up a server, today we use external hard drives or a NAS. These solutions work, but today many companies are moving backups to a online/remote/cloud solution. True an on-site backup solution provides a quicker recovery, but what happens if your building floods or has a fire, where is the backup device?

As with any technology the pricing for cloud solutions have become more affordable and with internet speeds increasing it makes more sense, plus some plans allow you to backup all your devices. Your data is encrypted and stored on multiple servers.

A service we offer is a NAS to NAS backup solution. You backup your data to a NAS in your office, but set up a duplicate in our Oak Creek data center. If something happens we can run the NAS over to you within about an hour.

For our backup solutions we offer a third party or storage in our local data center. In either case the data is stored in your physical location and off-site.
